X-Men Origins: Wolverine
I liked it, but felt it could have been so much more. I think I'm more inclined to agree with Gari than Big Dave about the film, it did feel like they were flinging as much shit at the wall as possible & seeing what stuck. Surely the studio & the writers knew they were onto a winner if this was done right, so why not tell some of the story in this film & expand upon it in a sequel?

There is going to be a sequal, the set up was after the credits.

Re: Film's you've seen today
Couldn't be bothered to stay through the credits, but what I meant was why try & cram masses into this film when you could just tell a bit of the story & tell it well, then move onto another part of the story in the sequel?

Re: Film's you've seen today
Realistically, sequel-wise, they've only left two major periods
1. Japan - Use Mariko, Silver Samurai and maybe add the Hand and Sunfire to keep the feel. Possible Ogun retooled into leader of the Hand?
2. Alpha Flight - They renamed Heather Hudson's husband in the credits -Tyler Hudson - Why? He wasn't named in the dialogue - maybe that was so the "son" could be James MacDonald Hudson? Maybe bring back Sabes and add Wendigo as the villains?
It has sort of locked them into specific stories or totally new stuff. Why not take longer to tell the key points of the origin? The childhood - six issues on the comics - could have been more than 2-3 minutes - at least explained why one brother was "Creed" and one wasn't (be it "Howlett" or "Logan"...and if the former then why choose the name Logan? another question ignored)
Was just a mishmash.

Re: Film's you've seen today
Personally, I'd have had the film end after Wolverine had the adamantium bonded to his skeleton & went on the rampage afterwards and expanded earlier parts of the film such as his childhood.

It wasnt that bad, it was a nothingy action film, if you went expecting anything more, you have no one but yourself to blame.

Re: Film's you've seen today
Thing is, with the source material, it COULD have been so much more.
Anyway
Star Trek
Everything Wolverine wasn't
Succint
Flowing
Fully explained
and given that in THIS film they'd had to recast eveyone, how did THIS one manage to be faithful to every origional character. Pine's mannerisms, Checkhov's youthful exhuberance, Quinto's stoicism...all good, but Urban as Bones was so spot on it was amazing. Almost like Kelley had been schooling him from the afterlife, he was the complete package. The tone, mannerisms, reactions and voice were absolutely on the mark.
THIS was a good summer film!

I was expecting a coherant straight forward action film, something that even the stupidest of movies can at least get right but this doesn't. Easily the worst 10 quid I've spent in the cinema in a long time.
Star Trek
Excellent. Just as Gari said. A great little movie (that I had very low expectations for). Zachary Quinto and Eric Bana steal the show, but the young guy who played Kirk wasn't bad. It was fun, it was non stop, and as Gari said everything Wolverine wasn't.

Star Trek- my interest in Star Trek and all its incarnations died years ago but this was fucking brilliant. I actually hope that they go ahead now and make a series of movies as long as they are like this!

My Name Is Bruce: Bruce Campbell hams it up as a piss-take version of himself in a fantastic horror comedy with a nutty ending. Fun, if not exactly deep.

The Mist - Alright. Some bad acting in parts and some bad CGI but it was generally enjoyable. I won't spoil the ending but King purists might not like the changes made from the novella.

Apparently King loved the movie ending so much he was annoyed he didn't write it himself.

Re: Film's you've seen today
Zulu Dawn
The prequel to Zulu, made 15 years later covering the events that launched the Anglo-Zulu war immediately prior to Rorke's Drift.
God but the English governer (or whatever he was) was a jackass. And not just in the film. He was in real life too, and the movie got that, and the attitude of some of the English troops, absolutely right. He instigated a conflict against over 40,000 native warriors just to make his name. The pretentions of the "civilised" politicians and military leaders is so often ignored in films like this, but is rightfully protrayed in full this time out.
More historically accurate than Zulu, and yet still omitting or adjusting so many moments for cinematic licence. A tragic moment in British military history, well portrayed, yet less well known that the subsequent Rorke's Drift attack.

Taken - very well done I thought. A great little 90 min thriller with good action and suspense.
The Wrestler - A littler over hyped I thought, but still very good. Certainly gives some insight into the industry, but shouldn't be taken as gospel truth either.

It seems like the comic film sequels to the setup films always do better; Dark Knight, Spiderman-2, X-Men 2, etc.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine
I enjoyed it, but I felt it ended a bit too abruptly. I'm hoping for there to be a Cyclops version, especially after what happened in this one.

Black Hawk Down - Good!

Tried to go and see Angels and Demons last night and then lightning caused a power cut in the cinema during the trailers, knocking out all the projectors (but nothing else).

I really hated the first one, the Punisher was ok but not great and Travolta was shit.

Angels & Demons
Was a lot less cheesey than the Da Vinci Code. More intense, darker, faster. Still a little cliched in places, but a few really good twists.
