From my understanding they don't have large numbers. So I don't know why that wouldn't work. I'll admit I'm not too up on this issue though, as I've never been to the UK and it doesn't get any play in US news.
Well the British secret service had a major presence in Northern Ireland for over 30 years and had a much denied but seemingly very real shoot to kill policy and it only created more recruits to replace those who had been eliminated. Its even been claimed that a special unit was created in the early 70's to cause havoc and blame it on the IRA to discredit their name in what they saw as a legitimate war between them and Great Britain. Dont know how much of that is true but it helps make up the strong propoganda that hardline Republicans have used for years to recruit new members.
I dont actually know how you could stop these new guys because the people they looked up to in the past and grew up hearing war stories about are now all sitting in goverment that argue a lot and do very little are asking them to stop so they feel betrayed by their heroes. They wont listen to the Dublin Goverment because a lot of hardliners are angry at the fact they have never tried to take back the 6 counties that make up Northern Ireland. One thing about the Republicans are that they will be very well organised and hard to break. The IRA had some of the most sophisticated bomb makers in the world in their ranks for years and from the sounds of it this new group arent to shabby at it either.
