Quite suprised that this has been picked out by the media.

Well on MTV Cena made a challenge to The Rock for Wrestlemania 26. The crowd would shit on him mind you.

The Rock did juggle movies and WWE for a while but once you've won the title 7 times what else is there to prove?

"He's the guy I say I won't be like" - entertaining in the ring and on the mic, reinvents himself effectively to prevent his act becoming stale (maivia -> heel rock -> corporate rock -> people's champ -> funny rock), not forced down people's throats, starring in movies that are actually watchable... yip, think Cena's right there Razz

With this and Cena's comments last year I still think Cena's jealous of the Rock.

Mind you, Rock's response to that was awesome:

He's just trying to kick up some publicity for 12 rounds and Wrestlemania.

Exactly. I doubt Cena is that much of an asshole that he'd call someone out - unless he was told it was going to happen for certain.

I imagine those things are mostly due to the creative team.

True but at least when creative give him a different character he doesn't play the same one with a different wardrobe.

the problem is (and this isn't me trying to be cool in saying it), Cena's promos till completely and utterly suck, in his five years or so as a face they have got gradually worse, if that is possible. The AGRESSIVE SHOUTY ONES are amongst the worst in the company of that style, and the comedy ones are not funny (re the comedy ones, they are written by the same people as the other wrestlers comedy ones, so quite clearly it is the person delivering the promos at fault)

The only way this would be salvaged would be Cena as a heel (and that would be the only logical way to run it anyway), however unless he went back to his pre face turn persona, it would be such a one sided microphone fued it would be completely pointless

I agree completely - unfortunately they're not going to turn him heel any time soon - he's a merchandising machine and it's safe to say that both Cena and Rey are in the permanent face category until someone comes along who sells more T-shirts. Particularly in these economic climes, McMahon is not going to kill the Golden Goose unless he has another one lined up. He never turned Hogan heel and Bret only went back to heel after it was obvious that Austin was going to be huge.

Vince has always, always tried to build his company around a whiter than white good guy except, ironically, in the late 90s early 00s Attitude era when sales were through the roof... funny that...

But doesnt Orton and Edge sell a fair amount of T-shirts even though they are heels?

If Cena was entertaining enough in his heel role surely he would sell just as many if not more

Sure it said Cena's merchandise has sold way more than Austin's did.

I can confirm that this is now ON.

Lots of rumours flying around at present, but Wrestlemania 28 seems to be the popular choice of when this will happen.
