    Must See Matches

Post  Mr Torrie Wilson on Sun Jan 11, 2009 1:21 pm

Blatantly nicking Mtank's threads in some of the other zones then, what matches would you classify as must-see? This wouldn't necessarily be the same as your greatest matches of all time, in fact the matches might not even be that good, just matches that you think any wrestling fan owes it to themselves to watch at least once.

    Some of my picks:

Bret Hart vs Steve Austin - Wrestlemania XIII. By far and away the finest match I've ever seen. One of the few matches I'd truly consider a work of art.

Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels - Survivor Series 97. Arguably the most famous match of all time, for the wrong reasons.

Mankind vs Undertaker - King of the Ring 98. Made Mick Foley a superstar. Biggest Holy-Shit moment ever.

Shawn Michaels vs Razor Ramon - Wrestlemania X. Wasn't the first ladder match, probably no longer the best, definitely not the most spectacular, but the one that put the concept on the map.

The Rock vs Hulk Hogan - Wrestlemania 18. Godawful match, but well worth watching for the incredible reactions from the crowd and the ultimate reminder of Hogan's ability to manipulate the crowd.

Travis Tomko vs Stevie Richards - Unforgiven 2004. Godawful match, but well worth watching for the incredible non-reactions from the crowd and the ultimate reminder that not everyone gets to be like Hogan. Watching this match makes you feel the same way you felt watching some of the excruciating moments of the UK version of The Office. Except that instead of laughing afterwards, you feel the need to take a series of cold showers.

Bret Hart Vs Mr. Perfect - Summerslam 1991. This captured my imagination when I first saw it aged 7. It's still may favourite ever match and I enjoy it every bit as much now as I did then although for slightly differet reasons.

'Macho Man' Randy Savage Vs Ric Flair - Wrestlemania 8. Fantastic match, following some excellent promos leading into it. It often gets overlooked when discussing this sort of thing but for me it's up their with some of the best WWF matches of the 90's.

Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels - Wrestlemania 12: In my opinion the best pure wrestling match that WWE has ever put on.

Bret Hart v Jerry Lawler @ Summerslam 1993
Bret was expected to go in, easily annihilate Lawler and emerge victorious. But this is an example of incredibly smart booking that did not let Bret get Lawler so easily and actually ends with Lawler as the winner. Brilliant.

Bret Hart vs British Bulldog: SummerSlam '92.
My favourite match ever, one of those where there's strength, skill, psychology, crowd involvement, brilliant commentating (even Vince had a decent one, Heenan was off the charts awesome) and a good build-up, just amazing.

Stone Cold v. The Rock, Wrestlemania XVII
It's one of the matches I'll never forget. A well -fought and -wrestled battle and, even though somewhat random ending at the time, with Stone Cold shaking Vince's hand being one of those epic wrestling moments in my mind because of Stone Cold and Vince's feud years before.

Mankid V Undertaker King of the Ring '98 I can't believe anyone hasn't mentioned this already. Probably the biggest bump ever taken at a major promotion. A stunning match that non-wrestling fans can enjoy.

I'll go with RVD V Jerry Lynn, Hardcore Heaven 99, Ric Flair V HBK, Wrestlemania 24, Mike Awesome V Masato Tanaka, November to Remember 99, Chris Beniot V Dean Malenko, Hog Wild 96 and Rey V Kidman V Juvi, Starcade 98

Good pick there, still watch Taker-Foley HIAC match once every 2 months or so. Foley bumped like a madman and Taker was on form despite having a broken foot...superb match

One match I just watched the other day deserves a mention, Eddie vs Rey which opened up Mania 21...a fantastic PPV opener, it reminded me how awesome Eddie was

Also Angle vs HBK from the same PPV, outstanding match

Kevin Nash, Scott Hall & Mystery Partner v Sting, Lex Luger & Randy Savage - Bash at the Beach '96.

Considering it did so many things wrong, it's amazing that this match proved to be one of the most famous in the history of WCW and american pro wrestling. The heels spend the majority of the match outnumbered by the faces; Randy Savage should not have been in the match but rather a chief suspect in the 'Who's the Partner?' mystery with perhaps a run-in late on to save the WCW guys and they sacrificed their biggest merchandising face for the sake of an unexpected heel turn. Except it worked. Hogan turning heel and cutting that promo, for all that later went wrong with the nWo and WCW in genera was a tremendous moment.

Kurt Angle v Steve Austin - Summerslam '01
Another in a long line of WWF/E not knowing when to pull the trigger. Angle was white hot with the crowd as a face and the two of them put on an absolutely classic match tainted only by the cheap finish . They switched the belt at Unforgiven in September but the moment had passed. A fabulous match that drew me in and I was gutted when Angle didn't get the belt that night.

    Triple H v Scott Steiner - Royal Rumble 2003
My mate and I played a drinking game while watching this - we had to take a shot everytime Scott Steiner tried a suplex. We ended up bladdered. Absolutely hilarious watching him plod about for what feels like hours. I genuinely felt for Trips that night. The poor sod was out of his depth.

The Rockers v The Orient Express - Royal Rumble '91
Two teams classed as little more than jobbers to the stars put on an absolute clinic and a star is born. Tremendous tag team match from four guys with nothing to lose.

Chris Benoit vs. Kurt Angle at - Royal Rumble 2003
Most of the Angle/Benoit matches were great and if IIRC this was the first for the WWE Title between the two. Was a good match with close calls and submission reversals.

Cactus Jack vs. HHH - Royal Rumble 2000
The pure hatred made this a fantastic brawl to remember. Foley even taunting HHH to give him the chair shot while hancuffed was great.

Benoit vs. HBK vs. HHH - Wrestlemania XX
It was a special night as Benoit made his dream on the 20th WM. The crowd were into it all aswell as the ending scenes.

Eddie Guerrero vs. Brock Lesnar - No Way Out 04
Again like the Triple threat, it was special night for Guerrero although it didn't have the story behind it like Benoit. He did cheat but the crowd couldn't give a toss as it was his gimmick and Lesnar was heel anyway.

Some great choices, I think that I would add:

    Chris Benoit vs Kevin Sullivan
WCW Great American Bash. June-16, 1996

This was the now infamous Bathroom Brawl, maybe not so much a wrestling match as a flat out brawl, and quite intensely done.

1997 WCW War Games- Horsemen vs nWo

Well built up match with the question of whether Curt Hennig would be ready to wrestle or not. Memorable for the end, when Curt Hennig slammed Ric Flair's head in the cage door.

That was EXTREMELY intense! At the next ppv, the giant had to break character to stop Beniot stamping on Kevin's head!

    Here's another WCW one.

Rey V Eddie, Halloween Havoc 97
. Without doubt it was the best match the 2 have ever had.

    For MTW:

    Triple H v Cactus Jack - Royal Rumble 2000

AKA, Star-Making Through Violence. Quite possibly the greatest No DQ match the WWE has ever put on, as Foley and Trips go to town on each other in a dedicated (and succesful) effort to make HHH look like one of the all time greats and re-establish Mick as a serious wrestler. Ably assisted by Ross and Lawler on commentary (even if JR couldn't remember which persona Mick was in), this is a title match than feels like it MEANS SOMETHING, both in terms of making the belt seem more prestigous and in making you believe that the characters genuinely hate each other.

One match I forgot to add was one with my 2 all time fave wrestlers...Shawn Michaels vs Chris Jericho at WM19. Very underrated match. For their first feud it was a cracking match, great storytelling. Plus Y2J's dick-ishness after match kicking Michaels in the nuts was a great way to get a bit of heel heat back.

I loved their 2008 matches, but this match was a cool way to start the long term rivalry off

    Shawn Michaels v Angle - WM21

A match that had little to no build, no story and very few promos. As a matter of fact I think the match was only announced about a week before WM. And was without a doubt the best match that night.

Brock v Undertaker - Hell in a Cell

Incredible Cell match and I think that it tops the Undertaker HBK one from 97.

Yep. I'd say it had a pretty strong build actually. Kurt attacked HBK with the steel steps after he was eliminated, then brought back people from HBK's past including Sherri and Jannetty, with the feud building on both Raw and Smackdown. Also, the match was announced the day after No Way Out, after Angle lost to Cena.

    Good digging up there Stig.

I remember Kurt doing HBK's music and absolutely pissing myself at it. Very funny stuff.

Matches that I believe everyone should see? Hmmm, some of my choices have been mentioned but theres a tonne...good or bad so here goes.

Shawn Michaels vs HHH - 2 out of 3 falls - Armageddon 2002

I thought this match was pretty awesome at a time when HHH really wasnt. Just after Shawns comeback as well and very good.

Kennel From Hell match (98/99?) - Got to see this! Everything crap about wrestling is in this but has a lot of charm to it.

RVD vs Christian - Ladder Match for the IC title on RAW - Very entertaining and for a PPV match would be awesome but was given away for free on RAW. Stupidly good for a TV match but also a reminder of how WWE wasted these two.

    Thats my lot for now.
