    Euthanasia Empty Euthanasia

Post  Guest Thu Dec 11, 2008 1:13 am

A lot of coverage in the news about this, with people travelling to Switzerland for assisted suicide because their lives have become unbearable. This is apparently only now an issue because it's being shown on TV. Rolling Eyes

In what will almost certainly be a vain attempt to stir up and intelligent debate, how does everyone feel about euthanasia? Personally I'm for it. We do it to animals when they become unable to live a happy life, so why not do the same to humans who actually have the power to request it? I wouldn't want a friend or relative (or even an enemy) to suffer if there was a chance of ending it.

    How does everyone else feel?

It's like Gay marriage, because I'm not religious I can't think of any reasons not to be for it.

Obviously if the person is in pain and has thought things through rationally they should be allowed to do it

Life might be sacred and gift from God, or so im told, but who wants a broken gift?

I like the way you've phrased that IOV, sums it up nicely. But if we make euthanasia legal we get into all kinds of hypocritical situations. Such as killing another person is illegal, but helping them to die would now be legal. And would all the anti-death penalty people start protesting against assisted suicides?

Could well be the wisest statement made on the forum since Inno compared Triple H to burnt toast.

    Nothing, it's bloody brilliant.

I believe the comment was in response to Triple H saying that Internet fans couldn't have valid opinions because they'd never wrestled, Inno responded "I'm not a 5* chef but I know what burnt toast looks like"

I'm for it but understand why people would be opposed. For example the sufferer on TV was a Motor Neurone sufferer which seems to be one of the worst diseases around to live through and you can live your life up to a point but when it becomes too much and you become reliant then in that case I support the option to be there. It's up to the individual whether the choice is made which is a lot more than we give a dog.

There's a lot of legal avenues that would have to be tackled like KabukiJoe said, but hopefully the option should be available there for those thoroughly checked over by doctors and evaluated that they're of sound mind to go through with it.

I can really sympathise with terminally ill people who want to end their lives, but I think it would really open Pandora's box to legalise this. Very very dangerous. Even if consent is achived, there's always the chance people can be brainwashed into agreeing to it when they're feeling they're becoming a burnden. I really doubt I could do anything like that for anyone close, no matter how bad they were, but that said, I've been foruntate enough never to be personally affected by someone going through that.
